Stradbrook Island

In early March we drove to Brisbane and took a one hour ferry ride to Stradbrook island for a couple of days. It was arranged through the teacher exchange program and there were about 50 of us. They had pre-booked beach houses to accommodate everyone. All we had to do was show up and enjoy ourselves. The activities included hiking, swimming at the many different beaches, wandering over to the patio at the local hotel to enjoy a frosty pint when necessary, and making it back to the beach house for an evening barbecue. Now that's my kind of weekend.

Turtle Hatching

On the second week in February we went to watch loggerhead turtles hatching, pushing their way to the surface of the sand and crawling into the ocean. The nest location was marked when the mother laid the eggs and when they began hatching wire mesh is put around the area so people don’t step on and squash the babies. When they have all made it to the surface they remove the mesh and they race to the water. Keep in mind these are turtles and I use the term “race” loosely.
